Blue Buffalo presently does not have any ongoing recalls for its pet food or treats. However, the brand did experience three recalls between 2010 and 2016, including a limited recall in May 2016 for specific batches of sweet potato–flavored dog food due to issues with moisture and mold. Additionally, in November 2015, a recall was issued for a single lot of chew bones due to potential salmonella contamination, and in October 2010, dry Blue Buffalo food was recalled due to an excess of vitamin D.
Other notable recalls involve a Blue Wilderness recall on March 17, 2017, related to thyroid hormone concerns, and a recall of Blue Kitty Yums on November 6, 2015, due to propylene glycol.
It is noteworthy that the FDA has identified Blue Buffalo as a potential contributing factor to canine congestive heart failure. In 2019, the FDA linked over 10 cases of this disease to a diet consisting of Blue Buffalo grain-free dog food.
